There were scenes of 'absolute carnage' at Manchester Airport on Wednesday (September 3) with roads gridlocked and motorists claiming to have been stuck in car parks for 'an hour'.
Pictures shared online showed queues to exit drop off car parks with others showing congestion building around roundabouts along Outwood Lane and Domestic Approach, between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.
It's understood that it is the start of one of the busiest spells of the year for the airport, with people flocking for more affordable holidays now schools have returned.
Manchester Airport said that marshals were deployed to help manage and guide the gridlocked traffic which cleared up within around an hour.
The latest incident comes just days after people complained of 'utter chaos' with motorists 'honking horns' in 'manic' scenes after spending an hour trying to escape a pick up area for Terminal 1.
A temporary barrier fault caused long delays last week in the short stay express pick up area, which has been temporarily moved and repurposed at the former meet and greet returns area.
On Wednesday, passengers and motorists described the issue as 'absolute carnage', showing long winding queues of cars along Domestic Approach outside Terminal 3, and while waiting for the barriers in an outdoor car park near Terminal 1. There was also slow traffic between major connecting roundabouts on Outwood Lane.
"Took an hour to get out of terminal 1 earlier today. Absolute chaos," one person wrote on X, showing a line of cars waiting to exit the car park.
"Absolute carnage getting out of Terminal 3 drop off - unknown issues at terminal 1 resulting in queues," posted another motorist near Terminal 3. "Now being charged £25 for drop off when I was delayed beyond my control. Ridiculous and disproportionate. Sort it out."
As another shared: "Been here for almost 40 mins and not moving. Nowt like travelling at 400mph across Europe and then getting stuck in the sodding airport car park for an hour!!"
A spokesperson for Manchester Airport said: "We are aware of congestion around the site which was caused by significant traffic today.
"We deployed traffic marshals to ease the congestion. We apologise for the inconvenience."
It comes after the airport recently announced new changes to the way drivers are billed for dropping off and picking up passengers. Barrier-free systems were introduced for motorists to pay online or over the phone by midnight the following day.
