Manchester Airport opens new security hall at Terminal 2

Manchester Airport has moved another step towards the completion of its Terminal 2 expansion project, with the opening of the first new check-in desks and the terminal’s new security hall.

The security facility houses ten new lanes with the latest screening equipment – five of which have opened initially.

Theoretically passengers should no longer need to remove electronic devices from their hand luggage when using the new lanes, although the airport says that “for now we continue to advise all passengers to prepare for security as normal”.

The new security hall opened in time for the busy May half-term, with more than one million passengers due to fly into or out of Manchester between 23 May and 1 June.

The airport is set to unveil the final phase of its Terminal 2 revamp later this year, including new high street-style shopping area The Avenue, and a second pier with additional boarding gates.

A fly-through of the expanded terminal was released in February, showing the passenger journey from arrival at the new check-in hall, through security and then upstairs to the international departure lounge and through a new World Duty Free store.

This completion of the final phase of works will mark the culmination of a ten-year, £1.3 billion transformation programme – although Manchester Airport has already set its sights on the revamp of Terminal 3.

The expanded Terminal 3 will incorporate parts of the existing Terminal 1, which will close when the new Terminal 2 fully opens.

Commenting on the news Manchester Airport managing director Chris Woodroofe, said:

“Seeing the first passengers go into the new security hall is very exciting for everyone here, as it was one of the major milestones we have been working towards since first announcing the transformation ten years ago.

“Here at Manchester Airport, we are proud to connect the North to the world and as we take these huge steps towards completing our £1.3bn transformation it means we’re connecting those passengers via an airport terminal that can rival any across Europe.

“The new security hall is opening just in time for the May half-term break which is one of the busiest weeks of the year for us – I’m looking forward to hearing what our passengers think of it.”
