The latest stage of the airport’s revamp will see Terminal 1 used as the new entrance to Terminal 3 and to provide 40% more departure lounge seating in the revamped building. There will also be a 500-seat bar area with airfield views and a 200-seat dining area, as well as more shops and facilities in the arrivals area.

The airport’s managing director Chris Woodroofe said: “Moving to a two-terminal airport is giving us a great opportunity to use some of the existing Terminal 1 space to increase the footprint of Terminal 3.

“We’re doing that as well as making some all-round improvements to Terminal 3 – so passengers will enjoy new security technology, more space, more seats, new retail and food and drink, and more.”

Manchester Airports Group has invested £1.3 billion on its flagship airport, the bulk of which was spent on Terminal 2, which was extended in 2021. A second phase of works will bring the existing part of the building up to the same standard as the extension, with more than 20 new retail, restaurant and bar outlets. This is due for completion later this year and will be used by 70% of the airport’s passengers.

A new security hall is about to be opened and new shops being fitted out, while external work on a second pier is close to completion.
