One of Manchester Airport's two runways had to be closed for two hours today to fix a pothole. The incident had little impact on services, with the airport switching flights to its second runway.

One of the airport's airfield staff spotted the small pothole, said to be the size of a mobile phone, on Runway 1 at about 2pm on Friday, January 9, 2026.

The runway was immediately closed and services were diverted to Runway 2, which was not in service at the time as January is a quiet period. It is understood one EasyJet flight which was approaching to land on Runway 1 had to abort its landing and it performed one 'go around' before landing as normal, on Runway 2. No other flights were affected.

The pothole was fixed and flights were switched back to Runway 1 by 4pm.

Some departing flights did suffer delays today, but it was because of poor weather elsewhere in the UK and on the continent.

A spokesman for Manchester Airport said: "In order to make sure of the repair of a small defect on Runway 1, we had to switch operations from one runway to the other. There was no impact on the flight schedule."

Manchester Airport opened its second runway at a cost of £172m in 2001.
