Manchester Airport reported its busiest ever month in August – five years on from when the last record was set.

The airport welcomed 3.36 million passengers last month, narrowly surpassing the 3.31 million who travelled through the airport in August 2019.

Manchester Airport has been regularly reporting record passenger numbers in terms of specific months over the last year, but this is the first time it has posted record monthly traffic figures in absolute terms since before the Covid-19 pandemic.

The airport also recorded its busiest ever day last month, with 113,000 passengers flying into or out of Manchester on 23 August.

The most popular destination last month was Palma de Mallorca with 130,000 passengers, followed by Antalya (107,000), Dalaman (101,000), Dubai (99,000) and Dublin (97,000).

What do the record passenger numbers mean for the passenger experience? Our readers will be best placed to comment on this (and please do let us know your recent experiences via the comments section below).

But for its part Manchester Airport said that 98.2 per cent of passengers waited less than 15 minutes at security last month, with 74.3 per cent waiting less than five minutes.

Commenting on the news Manchester Airport’s managing director Chris Woodroofe said:

“We are really proud to connect the people of the North to the world – that means offering them an unrivalled range of destinations with a huge range of airlines and providing them with the highest levels of customer service.

“And I am delighted to say that this summer we’ve achieved that. Not only have we seen record numbers of passengers using the airport, we’ve seen 98 per cent of them waiting for less than 15 minutes to get to security and almost three quarters waiting less than five minutes.

“That’s an amazing achievement and my thanks go out to my staff and all the third parties based around the airport who have made that happen. The summer holidays are the highlight of the year for many families and we’re pleased to be able to play a part in that.

“I said that last year was our best summer ever but this year we’ve managed to improve on that. Now we’re looking ahead to next year and the completion of our £1.3bn transformation programme that will see more than 70 per cent of our passengers using our brand-new Terminal 2 and improvements made to Terminal 3 as we close Terminal 1.”
